Not in the Cards...

GAME 1 (Olympic Stadium) MON 6, STL 3:
The game was scoreless until Montreal broke the ice in the bottom of the 4th when "the hawk" Andre Dawson scored on an Ellis Valentine Sac Fly. Both teams exchanged runs in the 5th and after the Cards tied it at 2 in the top of the 7th both teams expected this pitcher's duel between Warneke and Rogers to continue. Unfortunately for STL Warneke became human and the Expos torched him for 4 runs in the home half of the 7th to win the day. Light hitting Chris Speier launched a two run homer to break the tie. Stan Bahnsen and Elias Sosa closed it out as the Expos won their home opener.

GAME 2 (Olympic Stadium) MON 2, STL 0:
The Spaceman, Bill Lee spun a masterful 2 hit shutout as the Expos moved to 2-0. Montreal scored 2 runs off of Cardinal starter White in the first inning and Lee made it hold up. Larry Parrish's 2 run clout accounted for all of the scoring.

GAME 3 (Sportsman's Park): MON 9, STL 4
Mort Cooper was nursing a 3-2 lead until the top of the 6th when the Expos erupted for 5 runs as they batted around. The crushing blow was a 2 run homer by Expo starter Dan Schatzeder who also went 7 and gave up 3. David Palmer came on for the final 2. Every Expo starter had at least 1 hit. Gary Carter had 3 RBI's as well as 3 walks as his avg went to .444. Enos Slaughter knocked in 3 runs in a losing effort.

GAME 4 (Sportsman's Park): STL 5, MON 4
Max Lanier went the distance for the Cards and prevented the Expos from gaining a sweep. Ross Grimsley gave his Expo team a chance by hanging in there. With the Cards leading 3-2 Expo reliever Rudy May was uncharacteristically wild and that cost his team 2 runs and the game, because his team managed to score 2 of their own to lose by 1 run in the 9th. Mancuso and Brown both had RBI singles in the bottom of the 8th off May. The Kid, Gary Carter's 2 run shot off Lanier in the 9th brought it back to within 1, but both Tony Perez and Dave Cash were unable to reach base as Lanier shut the door for the Cards first win of the season. Terry Moore had 3 hit as did Lanier, who helped his own cause out.
