Max Lanier went the distance for the Cards and prevented the Expos from gaining a sweep.
Ross Grimsley gave his Expo team a chance by hanging in there. With the Cards leading 3-2 Expo reliever Rudy May was uncharacteristically wild and that cost his team 2 runs and the game, because his team managed to score 2 of their own to lose by 1 run in the 9th. Mancuso and Brown both had RBI singles in the bottom of the 8th off May. The Kid, Gary Carter's 2 run shot off Lanier in the 9th brought it back to within 1, but both Tony Perez and Dave Cash were unable to reach base as Lanier shut the door for the Cards first win of the season. Terry Moore had 3 hit as did Lanier, who helped his own cause out.
